Hello MESA Families,

First, I wanted to thank everyone for making the teachers of MESA feel so appreciated this week.  We thoroughly enjoyed all of the flowers, cards, treats, smoothies, Thai lunch & massages.  I am so happy to have such a talented staff who cares so deeply for your children, but I’m also so grateful to have a community of parents who recognize and appreciate such qualities in an educator.  Such a supportive community is what makes our school so great, and I thank all of you for showing us you care.

I also wanted to thank the community for your participation in this year’s fundraiser.  Our Walk-a-Thon was very successful!  It was a wonderful event at a lovely location… and we even got lucky with the weather.  We had a great turnout the day of the event, but I was overwhelmed by the participation of all the extended family members.  Our online donations from so many people was a great success and helped us reach our goal of $4,300.  Our preliminary sum has us very close to this number, and as students continue to turn in their pledge sheets (due Wednesday, May 17th), we will most definitely reach our goal.  Over the summer, we will be erecting a fence on the north property line of the school, repairing and renewing the main bridge, and replacing ALL of the florescent light fixtures with LEDs.  Thank you all so much for everything you do to help make MESA a better place to learn and grow.

Beginning next week on Monday, May 15th the two Lower Elementary classrooms will be merging into one.  We have taken careful consideration and believe it will be best for students and teachers to join forces for the remaining 3 weeks of this school-year.  We have been slowly combining classes since our conferences in February when we informed all the parents about next year’s classroom make-up (having only 1 Lower El. class for 2017-18).  We have had each student spend one day each week in the main classroom, we’ve been coming together for songs, group lessons and some special subjects.  The teachers agree that it will be a smoother transition for the start of next year, and the students have all shown us that they are ready for this change and welcome it with enthusiasm.

There has been a few cases of illness that have surfaced over the past 2 weeks.  In the Upper El., one confirmed case of Strep but that student is well now after being absent and on antibiotics.  We’ve also noticed that this year is a very bad year for ticks, as there has been a big boom in the tick population.   We are seeing this at school (and I’m seeing it at my home) but we’ve had several students with ticks on them from the playground and would like to caution you all to check your child each night.  I’d like to share a free site for tick testing across the U.S.  ( https://sites.google.com/site/getitrighttreatthebite//remove-a-tick/free-tick-testing )

I would like to let everyone know that our Miss Grace has been accepted to UNCA’s summer program and is very excited about pursuing her degree.  The staff here at MESA are very happy for her and we’re sad to see her leave.  The program that she’s been accepted into begins next week, so today, Friday May 12 is officially her last day with us here.  We wish her the best of luck with her academic career and in the future.

Reminder -  Our Year-end performance will be on Wednesday, May 24th from 5:30pm until 7:30pm at the Beech Community Center.  We’ll be showcasing our Art and Music program.  Appetizers and refreshments will be served.  All MESA families and extended family are welcome to attend.
